In Monterrey’s environs you’ll find beautiful natural settings where you can do various outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking and horseback riding. In addition, you can climb up mountain peaks and cliffs that are more than 700 meters (2,310 feet) high.
Cascada Cola de Caballo Ecotourism Park. At this park you can go horseback riding to explore the surrounding areas. Open daily from 9:00 to 7:00.
Chipinque Ecological Park. This is the ideal place to go hiking or horseback riding with a tour guide. Open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Cañon de la Huasteca (Huasteca Canyon). This is the perfect place for rock climbing.
Cañon de Portero Chico (Portero Chico Canyon). Located 41 km (25 mi) northeast of Monterrey. At this place you’ll find two canyon mouths; one faces the southwest and has two caverns, while the other, known as Cerro de San Miguel, faces the opposite direction. The latter, which has huge cliffs, drops 890 meters (2,937 feet), making it the deepest canyon in the nation and one of the best places for rock climbing. Here you also can do Tyrolean rappelling.
Grutas de Bustamente (Bustamante Caverns). Located 105 km (65 mi) north of Monterrey, in the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park. These are the most beautiful and largest caverns in Mexico’s northern region. They lie 225 meters (742 feet) below the surface.
Grutas de Garcia (Garcia Caverns). Located 45 km (28 mi) northeast of Monterrey. At this group of caverns, which is more than 500,000 years old, you can appreciate the stalactite and stalagmite formations, as well as marine fossils.
