Another attraction is the whitewater rapids in Río Copalito that come down from the Sierra Madre del Sur. The highway to Oaxaca City crosses the river near Candelaria Loxicha, as does the dirt road leading from Santa Marúa Huatulco to San Miguel del Puerto. This is a good place to start going down the rapids when the river level is high.

Río Copalita and its surroundings
Going on a horseback or dune buggy ride is a good way to observe the local flora and fauna-much of the forest area is a natural reserve-or some of the bays that are slightly further a field where you can stop for a swim in the crystal-clear waters. Another attraction are the Río Copalita rapids.

Santa Cruz
Boats set off from Santa Cruz for a tour of the rest of the bays and their numerous beaches, where you can arrange to be picked up if you decide to spend the whole there. Diving, skiing and all kinds of water and nautical equipment can be hired except for kayaks that are only available in Tangolunda. Virtually all the bays offer drinks and grilled fish sold by the locals.
