Local Transportation
Taxis
Taxis in Manzanillo are not metered, you must agree your price before getting in. Hotels and taxis post taxi fares on a board depending on how far you will be travelling (it is defined by zones). With a little Spanish you will be able to negotiate a better price. You can also hire a personal taxi for the day. Tell the driver where you want to go and negotiate the price. The rate is between $80-150 U.S. dollars per day, depending on where you want to go.
TIP: You should always get the number and "sitio" (place) of the taxi. There are over 800 taxis in Manzanillo, and without the number and "sitio," you will never be able to track down any article you accidentally left in the backseat.
Buses
It is very easy to go around the bus system. Buses going to downtown have a sign of “El Centro” or “El Jardin” in its window (these buses always go south). If the sign says “Mercado” is going to the Market (going south); if it says “Las Hadas” or “Gran Costa Real” it is going to the Peninsula de Santiago where the 5-star hotels are located. The fare is between 1 and 2 pesos (U.S. dollars are not accepted nor large peso bills).
It is very safe to travel by bus. Normally a bus comes every 10 minutes in either direction.
If a bus sign says “Las Brisas” it is going to Las Brisas area (older area, the original hotel zone).
“Miramar” sign in the window, takes you north to Miramar Beach where open air tourist markets are located.
