Local Transportation
Downtown Cozumel is a grid of one way streets going east and west alternately. Once you know the system, getting around the island is a breeze. Ave Rafael Megar runs north to south and will get you from the north hotel zone all the way south to Chankanaab Park and Punta Celarain. The Trans Island Road will take you from the modern west side of the island to Cozumel's wild east side of the island. Click the map image (left) to see a streetmap of San Miguel. Here are a few tips for getting around:
Taxi service is readily available at just about any
place on the island, but especially in downtown San Miguel and at all of the
hotels. The fares are very reasonable, but we do recommend asking the driver
the cost of getting to your destination, before entering the taxi. Many of the
drivers speak a little English and all of them are very friendly. As with many
of the native Cozumelenos, you'll make the driver's day by speaking to him in
his native language, Spanish. Instead of asking, "How much to the
plaza?" ask, "Cuanto es a la plaza?" or "Cual es la tarifa
a la plaza?"
Your hotel's concierge keeps a current list of average taxi rates to various
locations on the island.
Taxis
• Keep small bills handy
for paying the fare
• Always make sure you have all of your
belongings before exiting the taxi
• Some taxi drivers already include the
tip in their fare, so it's a good idea to check the rates with your hotel
concierge so you don't double-tip the driver.
