Nature Walks
Mayan Riviera Ecological Walks
The grounds of the Bahia Principe Tulum/Akumal hotels cover a vast expanse of land that is best viewed from the tower, which is located on the road to the Akumal side of the resort. To get to it from Bahia Tulum you first go to the hacienda then you wait for a ride over to the Akumal side. When you see the tower jump off. You can also take a bicycle however you only get a bike for one hour, which means you can only climb the tower.
At the base of the tower is the entrance to a nature walk that winds through the jungle revealing numerous indigenous plants, animals and insects. Along the route you will discover a sweat lodge, a direction marker, a well and a traditional Mayan house.
You are diligently guided through your walk with a guide from the Fundación Ecologica who offers information about various trees and plants and what the Maya used them for.
The walk takes between an hour and an hour and a half and is presented in both Spanish and English. The cost is free but a donation to the foundation is recommended.
There is a morning walk and an afternoon walk [10:00 - 3:00]. We recommend the morning walk because it is cooler. Take lots of bug spray and wear long pants.
