Calendar of Events
National holidays such as September 15 are an occasion for great festivities. In the city’s plazas and parks, serenades, marimba and ballet performances are traditionally given free, which creates a friendly, festive atmosphere.
Merida on Sundays
Every Sunday, the streets surrounding the center of town are closed off and turned into a pedestrian precinct. Opposite the Municipal palace, people put on a play of a mestizo wedding with live music, and you can buy handicrafts, paintings, and antiques in the z=calo (the main square) during this popular evening party.
Plaza de Santa Lucfa
After a coffee and a tour of Paseo Montejo, you can ask the driver of your horse-drawn carriage to take you to Plaza Santa Lucfa. There, every Thursday at 9 pm, locals and visitors gather to listen to the Serenata Yucateca. The program includes reciters and soloists, the YucalpetTn Orchestra and ends with the traditional City Hall Ballet
The Monday dances
Every Monday at eight o’clock, a regional vaquerfa is held. During his party, people present the most important dance in Yucatan, the jarana, which is also put on at several regions festivals. The women wear the traditional huipil (colorfully embroidered blouse/dresses) and shawls and white shoes, while the men wear white drill pants and white guayabera shirts.
The Matkuil Yucatan Fair
There are exhibits on agricultural, artistic, commercial, gastronomic, industrial cattle breeding, fishing, and tourist themes at this major fair. There are also plays, Mexican rodeos, and live music, among other events. The opening procession is led by the young woman chosen to be the Queen of the Fair, and the whole event lasts two weeks. There is no set date for the Fair.
